Webster University - Orlando Area
History: The Webster University of the 1990s retains the same pioneering spirit envisioned by its founders in the early 20th century - a spirit of academic innovation which, for 80 years, has not wavered. Webster University traces its roots to 1812, with the founding of the Sisters of Loretto, one of the first religious communities of women in the United States. Loretto College, as it was named, opened with a student body of five and was staffed by eight Sisters of Loretto. At a time when higher education for women was not generally available, Loretto College was considered progressive. The College awarded its first degrees, in 1919, to a graduating class of two. In 1924, Loretto College was renamed Webster College, and the following year, Webster was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
