Watchable Wildlife
Where to go in Central Florida, what you can see, and what you need.
You don't have to go to a zoo if you know where and when to look. Have a good pair of hiking boots and binoculars. In some cases you will need a boat. Take along sunscreen and water, and wear a wide brimmed hat.
It is best to go in small groups of people. Stay on trails and in designated waterways. Venturing into wildlife habitat causes anxiety for the animals, and disturbs their breeding and foraging habits. Watch through binoculars or a good telephoto lens to minimize the impact.
Always remember these are wild animals and some can be dangerous. Normally cute, docile critters can turn extremely nasty and aggressive when they feel cornered or threatened. Just about any of them, especially an alligator, can out run a human over a short distance.
Responsible wildlife watching means not approaching animals, not disturbing their habitat, and not feeding them. Take only photographs, leave only footprints.
